What is DNS actually doing for my company?
The domain name system was created to map computer names to IP (internet protocol) addresses. Computer names like www.g4.net are merely a human convenience. In order for computers to communicate with one another, they need to know each other's IP addresses. The domain name system makes life easier for human beings trying to navigate the Internet, and gives computers a way to discover each other's IP addresses.

This functionality is critical so that your customers can find your web site and send e-mail to your company.

What is an MX record?
An MX record is a mail exchanger record. MX records are used in your domain so that an Internet mail server trying to send mail to your company knows what mail server to deliver your message to.

I've been denied connectivity to an Internet host because my reverse records don't match. What does this mean and how do I fix this?
A reverse DNS lookup is sometimes done as a security measure. When you connect to another Internet server as hostname.yourcompany.com with an IP address of 123.123.123.123, the remote Internet server may do a reverse lookup of 123.123.123.123 and see if it gets back hostname.yourcompany.com. If the reverse lookup does not match, your request to connect to that remote Internet server may be denied until the problem is resolved.

Our Technical Assistance Center will take your request for a reverse record update to meet your needs.

I'm the name server administrator for my company and want to manage my own reverse zone. Can G4 Communications delegate that to me?
Yes. G4 Communications can delegate responsibility for reverse IP to hostname resolution for your IP block to your name server if you wish.
