Why doesn't my application work through the firewall?
Some client server applications require that the firewall be configured with punch-throughs to operate correctly. (See What is a Punch Through? for more information.) If you do not know what protocol the application uses, contact the application vendor for information. The Technical Assistance Center can then add the appropriate punch-through for your application.

What is a DMZ?
A DMZ, or Demilitarized Zone, is used to allow traffic to servers while protecting against Denial of Service attacks. Any node that is attached to the DMZ port of the firewall will not have any valid Internet protocols blocked, but the firewall will scan for traffic patterns and block Denial of Service attacks.

What is a punch-through?
By default, firewalls will block all traffic in to the protected network (LAN). To allow certain protocols (such as POP, SMTP, HTTP. FTP) through the firewall, a punch-through must be created. A punch-through tells the firewall to allow a protocol through to a predefined server on the network. For example, you may want to allow all HTTP traffic to the web-server on your network. By calling the Technical Assistance Center at 1.888.840.4487, you can request a punch-through for your firewall. You will need to know which protocol you want allowed through the firewall, and the IP address you want the protocol allowed to.
